That’s exactly what went through my mind as I sat and listened to yet enough salesperson with a sales-patter designed to create a buyer’s mindset… I even explained twice that all I required was to have a conversation to establish if their package is for me… and then if I think it is… we can discuss the way forward. I smiled to myself as I pressed the ‘end call’ button on my mobile phone as a rush of possible reactions I would have taken as a younger man and what I would have said to him 😊 these are the times you realise how much you have changed
In the wise words of Julie Andrews… Start at the very beginning.
January 1st, 2020 and it’s a new decade. I don’t do new year’s resolutions as a rule, but this year was different. I had spent most of 2019 consolidating all the different programmes and packages I had delivered over the last 30 years. Working with my designer we created the ‘Trilogy’… 3 programmes that focused my efforts into the main areas I love delivering Beyond the Mask. Agreeing the way forward was with baby steps ensuring all the I’s were dotted and the t’s were crossed before we moved on to the next stage… and it worked amazingly well.
I had reflected over developments throughout 2019 whilst I celebrated Christmas in Switzerland with family. Walking in the swiss mountains is amazing and getting lost isn’t that hard to be fair, but what a place to get slightly lost for a short while. I found myself feeling quite excited about the Trilogy and got a great little team together working on all the aspects of launching the new website. Kenny was on top of all the technical and creative side of things and someone was joining us to lead on the social media platforms and I was ready… it felt right.
Cutting a long story short, the new website date to go live was planned for the beginning of March which unfortunately coincided with the world beginning to lockdown with Corona19… with this and some very unforeseen circumstances… and I didn’t know it at the time… I was at the beginning of a very steep learning curve. I needed to get my head around digital marketing and how to utilise the different social media formats which is something I am happy to admit, I don’t really get. I spoke with the designer who kindly suggested my starting point and off I went to find the most effective and efficient way of learning to share the Trilogy, Blogs from Beyond and the new website.
Ow, my days!!! what a bloody nightmare that turned out to be and finally, A number of weeks later and a number of courses, programmes and conversations I came to the point of no return… Enough was enough. I put the kettle on and then with a cup of tea… I sat down and offloaded the reactional thoughts that were now excitedly flying around my mind and putting them back in place ready for another day… they never go away completely do they.
So… what do I ‘now know’ that I ‘didn’t know’ before ???
I quite often find myself sitting and trying to figure out ‘the golden nuggets of learning’ from situations that appear to have wasted my time or taken me down a blind alley. Generally speaking…I manage to find something I can use or get value from. It wasn’t too long before I was having a full-blown conversation with myself around the one big thing that ‘I know now’… and the crazy thing was… I knew it before too but somehow… it felt like a completely new level of significance.
The Golden Nuggets…
What I know… I refuse to have conversations with people with a ploy to get them to engage if they are not ready to engage… Its that simple. Happy to discuss the different programmes and packages, answer questions and give time but trying to discuss finances even before you have figured out if it is good for purpose is wasting peoples time…
I have watched, listened to and spoke to many people over the last few weeks. What I have found really difficult is having a very straight forward and uncomplicated conversation with someone about what my problems are and if they have the solution, and most importantly… are they the person I am confident to invest my time, money and effort into solving my problems… frustrating to say the least. I checked out there website and Facebook page and the normal background search you do when looking to take someone services on and would have not got in touch if I didn’t think there was a possibility that they could be the person I have been looking for. They didn’t need to sell it to me… they just need to explain it to me.
I do get it and completely understand it too… there is a process that you can take people through to get them into what I call ‘The buyers’ Mindset’… so that when it comes to closing the deal… the buyer is in the right mindset to buy their service.
It’s not for me. Of course, I run a business and as with all businesses it needs to be financially stable to continue to survive… as stable as it can be in these times… but taking someone through any of the Beyond the Mask programmes or packages just for money doesn’t work… I have done it a few times when I was first started in this industry many years ago with the same results… not great. The sole biggest requirement from people engaging with Beyond the Mask is they have to be ready to take the bull by the horns and commit fully to THEMSELVES and becoming the best version of you yet and If you are not ready… you’re not ready… and if it’s not for you… its not for you… it’s OK
A straightforward and uncomplicated conversation with someone who you can discuss your problem and establish if they can resolve it… I’ll take it, please…
