Registering with a dentist
Approximately 95% of individuals in Scotland are registered for dental care and treatment under the National Health Service (NHS). If you find yourself uncertain about your registration status, it is advisable to confirm with your dental practitioner that you are indeed registered as an NHS patient.
Once you have registered with a dental practitioner, your registration is typically permanent, unless either you or your dentist requests to rescind the registration. It is mandatory for your dentist to provide a minimum of three months’ notice if they intend to withdraw your registration as an NHS patient. However, in instances of violent or abusive behaviour, or repeated non-attendance, the dentist may immediately rescind your registration.
If you seek treatment from another dentist without disclosing your existing registration, your NHS registration will be automatically transferred to the new dentist.
Registering Process
Upon identifying a suitable dentist and confirming their ability to accept you as a new NHS patient, you will need to provide them with certain key information. The registration process will entail providing your name and address, signing a registration form, and scheduling your initial dental examination.
Prior to your first appointment, you will be required to fill out a comprehensive medical history form. It is recommended that you bring an up-to-date list of any medications you are currently taking. At this juncture, you should receive all necessary information regarding your dentist, including the range of dental services they offer, the individual responsible for your dental treatment, their contact details, and operating hours.
In the case of registering a child, it is best to do this concurrently with your own registration. There is no need to delay until the child’s teeth have appeared; you are permitted to register them shortly after birth.
Please note that no deposit is necessary for an appointment to register as an NHS dental patient.
